In this five-week workshop, we’ll explore crushing as a liminal space in which the possibilities for being remain perpetually unfinished. Our interests will coalesce around topics of self-crushing, romantic crushing, literary and geographic crushing, etc. What ethical questions arise in writing desire? Can a haptic approach to writing generate new forms of relation, both of and beyond the quotidian? We’ll read essays, poems, letters and diary excerpts while working on in-class writing (lyric, epistolary, and automatic writing exercises) and take-home prompts.
